Japanese knotweed is an invasive weed and by its very nature is difficult to get rid of. In domestic gardens this problem can be exacerbated due to limited access for machinery and the knotweeds close proximity to buildings and neighbouring properties. This leaves us with the most cost effective and environmentally sustainable option, which is to treat the plant under an Herbicide Application Programme.
Japanese knotweed thrives on disturbance, so cutting the plant down in the growing season raises many problems. Cutting the Japanese knotweed down will have little to no effect in reducing the vigour of the plant, quite the opposite in fact as it raises the problem of how to dispose of the viable cuttings, do not place it in a compost heap (it’ll re-grow) or attempt to dispose of it at a recycling centre or with normal rubbish (it is controlled waste). Further to this if the knotweed is cut down then there is no way of effectively treating the plant with a non residual herbicide therefore prolonging the process of eradicating this invasive weed.
Some mortgage companies flinch at the sight of Japanese knotweed, making it very difficult to buy or sell a property with a knotweed infestation. The key to avoiding this problem is to identify the plant early and start the treatment process as soon as you can, don’t ignore it because it will not go away on its own.
Wreford can help you find the best solution. The herbicide programme is relatively inexpensive, the price may vary largely, but we normally are able to find a solution that complies with Best Practice and fits your pocket!
