We specialist in the control and eradication of Japanese knotweed throughout the UK. We are currently recruiting for a Knotweed Surveyor based in London. The region to be generally covered in this role will be West, North West, North and East of London and the East of England.

The role will be predominantly surveying. However, other tasks from time to time will include spraying, exploratory digs and excavations.

Surveying Work

This involves surveying knotweed on commercial or residential properties.

  • Surveying and identifying knotweed within a commercial or residential property
  • Discussing knotweed with clients on site
  • Measuring knotweed contaminated areas and the location on the property
  • Taking note of neighbouring knotweed as far as is reasonably possible
  • Taking photos of the site/knotweed areas and drawing a detailed site plan on an OS map
  • Filling in a survey form collecting as much information as possible and clearly relaying all the information back to the office promptly and ideally on the same day
  • Using Sharepoint and emails to report this information back to us. The clients often have many questions regarding knotweed and so talking to the client’s onsite is an important responsibility
  • The number of surveys per day will vary but on average will be two or three each day

You are the first person from the company that the client will see, so creating a good impression is vital.

Skills & Qualifications Required
  • BSc (Hons) Horticulture or Higher National Diploma/Certificate (HND/HNC) or a Foundation Degree in Horticulture/Agriculture or a related subject
  • CSCS – Skilled labourer /site worker H & S Certificate
  • PA1 & 2, PA6 & PA6W - Spraying certificate
  • A full UK driving licence
  • Good IT skills
Skills and Qualifications to Achieve within 12 Months of Employment
  • CSCS - Skilled labourer/site worker H&S Certificate
  • PCA CSJK - Certified Surveyor Japanese knotweed
  • PA6W - spraying near water certificate
  • SSTS - Supervisor Safety Training Scheme certificate
  • LANTRA Stem Injection Treatment
  • LANDTRA Brushcutter Refresher Course
  • Emergency First Aid certificate
In General
  • This role is field based, so your base of work will be deemed to be your home address
  • Responsible for the Health & Safety of yourself, other employees and public/clients on site
  • Maintain a record of work by photographs, site diary and marking up site plans
  • You will be required to travel high mileage to many parts of the UK during the course of your work and will from time to time stay away over night. Accommodation is paid for by the company.
  • You must be capable of working alone
  • You will be provided with a works van and the fuel
  • You will be provided with a mobile phone and a tablet to enable you to communicate remotely onsite and deliver the information back quickly. You will need internet access for you to communicate from home as required.
  • Training as and where necessary by in-house staff will be arranged
Work Days & Times

The role is Monday to Friday. The hours worked per day/ week will vary to meet the demands of the job. There will be early starts and some late finishes. The time you spend travelling will vary according to the location of the site(s).

Holiday

23 days annual holiday and 8 public bank holidays:-

We also operate a holiday buy back scheme. Up to 17 additional holiday days can be bought and these days can be taken during the winter period January to April.

  • 10 days to be taken during the period May to October
  • 5 days to be taken during the period November to April
  • 8 days at Christmas
  • 8 Public Bank holidays

Knotweed is an invasive weed and will spread if it’s not controlled. If a knotweed affected property is being sold the buyers lender is quite likely to require a specialist knotweed survey and a treatment programme or instant removal. If a commercial site is being developed the client will need a survey and a knotweed Management Plan (KMP) which quite often includes for excavation and removal. We provide these surveys and KMP’s and undertake excavation and treatment programmes.

We specialise in the control and removal of Japanese knotweed. We provide long term chemical treatment and guarantee programmes and immediate excavation options.

Typical clients include private home owners, housing associations, large corporate organisations, local authorities, utility companies, property developers, construction companies.

We operate throughout the UK, but the region generally covered in this role will be London, East of England and South East. There will be a requirement for you to travel further a field to undertake the work and you will be expected to stay away on some occasions.

The role will be predominantly knotweed excavations. However other tasks from time to time will include spraying, clearance work and knotweed surveying.

Excavations & Exploratory Digs

This involves the excavation of knotweed by hand and machine

  • The team will consist of 2 to 3 staff and will undertake commercial and residential excavations
  • Read the information as supplied by your manager (scope of works, risk assessments, method statements and works programme)
  • Liaison with client/client representative on the job
  • Manual and mechanical excavation and removal or on-site burial of knotweed
  • Installation of root barrier and backfilling voids
  • On-site supervision
  • Some landscape and fencing works
  • Exploratory digs to establish underground rhizome spread
Spraying Knotweed
  • Knotweed spraying at private and commercial properties
  • Treatment by knapsack or injection
  • Manual/mechanical removal of knotweed
  • Taking pictures and recording work carried out
  • Measuring knotweed contaminated areas and the location on the property
  • Dead stem cutting contracts
  • One-off clearance jobs
Skills & Qualifications Required
  • CSCS – Skilled labourer /site worker H & S Certificate
  • CPCS - qualifications in excavator above & below 10T
  • PCS qualification in forward tipping dumpers
  • PA1 & 2, PA6 & PA6W - Spraying certificate
  • Health and Safety of yourself, other employees with you and public/clients on the site
  • Form filling, photographs, Site Diary, marking up site plans, label and upload to Sharepoint.
  • People, project and time management skills.
  • Problem solving and use of initiative
  • Leading by example to carry out works in a safe, clean and efficient manner
  • A full driving licence is also needed.
  • Good IT skills
Skills and Qualifications to Achieve within 12 Months of Employment (if required)

In General
  • Your base of work will be deemed as being from your home address or any other base of work located within 25 miles of your home address.
  • Adhere to the information as supplied by your line manager such as the scope of works, Risk Assessments and Method Statements and works programme.
  • Lead by example to carry out works in a safe, clean and efficient manner.
  • Be capable of problem solving and using your own initiative.
  • Be capable of loan working.
  • You will be required to travel high mileage to many parts of the UK during the course of your work and will from time to time stay away over night. The company policy is that if the job is two days or more in duration and travelling time is in the region of 2 hours or more one way, you will be required to stay away. Accommodation is paid for by the company.
  • You will be provided with a works van and the fuel. A mobile phone and a tablet to enable you to communicate remotely onsite and deliver the information back quickly.
  • You will provide your own internet access for you to communicate from home as required.
  • There is an element of “evening” paper work.
  • Training as and where necessary by in-house staff will be arranged.
Working Hours

The role is Monday to Friday. The hours worked per day/ week will vary to meet the demands of the job.

The nature of the business will mean there will be some long working hours. There will be some early starts (6:00 to 6.30 am) and some late finishes (5:00 to 6:00 pm) meeting contract deadlines or appointments. You will generally work for 8 hours on site including a half hour lunch. The time you spend travelling will vary according to where the site is located and will need to be planned to meet the requirements of the on site hours above.

The Role

Working as part of the office based estimating and sales team, primarily involved with commercial knotweed excavations.

  • Taking enquiries and speaking to clients on the phone, as well as email
  • Logging each enquiry and administrating the Tender Log
  • Organising site surveys with the company's surveyors
  • Receiving survey reports and creating Knotweed Management Plan documents
  • Quantifying the treatment and excavation works to create quotes
  • Obtaining prices, completing and issuing quotes to clients
Experience
  • A practical/estimating knowledge of invasive weed management (ideal)
  • Experience in a quantification and estimating role (ideal)
  • A practical/estimating horticultural knowledge i.e. landscaping and landscape/excavation machinery (preferable)
Qualifications & Skills
  • A land based degree qualification, useful but not essential
  • Must be able to understand and quantify practical works
  • Must be numerically astute for pricing
  • Excellent on the telephone with a confident and articulate phone manner
  • Excellent with administration, organisation and prioritisation
  • Excellent in written and verbal communication
  • Excellent with Microsoft Office skills (Excel, Word and Outlook)
  • Good general IT skills with a knowledge of cloud based technologies
The Employment

This is a full-time position, Monday to Friday, 8:30am to 5:00pm with half and hour lunch break.

Holiday

The holiday entitlement is 23 days leave plus 8 public bank holidays to be taken as follows:

  • 10 days to be taken during May to October (Summer holiday period)
  • 4 days (Christmas holiday period)
  • 9 days to be taken during November to April (Winter holiday period)
  • 8 public bank holidays

We also operate a holiday buy-back scheme. Up to 17 additional holiday days (subject to management agreement) can be bought back and these days can be taken during the winter holiday period.
